Overview of Benazir Taleemi Wazaif Program

Benazir Income Support Program uses both conditional and unconditional cash transfer programs to help the low-income families of Pakistan. Benazir Taleemi Wazaif is a conditional cash transfer program under the BISP umbrella. It provides the stipends after every three months to the students of schools and colleges from class 1 to Class 12 (FSc./F.A./ICS). The mother of students should already be a beneficiary of the BISP or Benazir Kafaalat program, for students to be eligible for the Benazir Taleemi Wazaif.

Benazir Taleemi Wazaif shows a bit of gender discrimination, favoring the girls’ students, as it gives a higher stipend to female children. This is because the literacy ratio of girls is less than that of boys; therefore, to promote gender equality, it shows a bias in stipend distribution.

Initially, in 2012, Benazir Taleemi Wazaif operated in only 5 districts of Pakistan. In 2015, this program covered 27 more districts, expanding to a total of 32 districts in Pakistan. In 2019, its name was changed to Ehsaas Taleemi Wazaif, and it operated under the Ehsaas Program Umbrella. In 2020, the government expanded the program in all districts of Pakistan. In 2022, the Government again changed the name to Benazir Taleemi Wazaif Program.
